The Marit Peterson Fund for Melanoma Research benefiting M. D. Anderson Cancer Center

I guess you'd call me your typical fashion conscious New Yorker. Having worked as a merchandising expert for top fashion and beauty magazines including Vogue, Vanity Fair, Allure, Marie Claire, Self, Seventeen, and O (The Oprah Magazine), I thought I knew all the latest fashion trends.

The Marit Peterson Fund for Melanoma Research was established to fund a clinical program for inherited melanoma led by Jeffrey E. Lee, M. D. professor of surgical oncology in the Melanoma and Skin Center at M. D. Anderson.

Dr. Lee and his colleagues believe it is critical to have a clinical program for inherited melanoma. Currently, the research team has identified a few genes related to melanoma. However, thanks to the human genome project, they can now look at all the genes in the human genome.

The Melanoma Foundation of New England

The Melanoma Foundation of New England is dedicated to educating the public about the importance of early detection and prevention of skin cancer and melanoma, and helping patients and their caregivers cope with melanoma.

The Melanoma Foundation of New England was founded in 1999 by Mel and Marilyn Rubin following the tragic loss of their son, Mark, to melanoma. The Foundation was created to combat the rising rate of melanoma and melanoma deaths. The Foundation provides a variety of educational programs targeting the prevention and early detection of skin cancer for both children and adults.

The Foundation also assists patients and their caregivers struggling with melanoma by offering support groups, educational programs, and Billy's Buddies, a new one-on-one patient advocacy and support program. These programs are all free.

SHADE FOUNDATION:

SHADE Foundation of America was formed in 2002 by Shonda Schilling, wife of MLB pitcher, Curt Schilling, following her successful battle with melanoma. After being diagnosed with skin cancer, Shonda realized the lack of resources available to skin cancer patients and the absence of an organization in Arizona focused solely on melanoma.

Our mission is to eradicate melanoma through the education of children and the community on the prevention and detection of skin cancer and the promotion of sun safety. SHADE fulfills this mission through programs and support services including a Nationwide Poster Contest for grades K-8 to promote sun safety, a SHADE Grant Program for schools and community centers to provide shade covers, a Nationwide School Partnerships Program that involves children in learning sun safe behaviors, a Body Check 101 DVD that encourages viewers to examine their skin, and a Newly Diagnosed Kit which is provided for melanoma patients.

Teb's Troops

Teb's Troops, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization started after Tricia E.
