The Importance of Sun Protection

Do you enjoy spending time outdoors? Do you take extra care with your sun protection?

For anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors, it is vitally important to take sun protection seriously. Today, it can be dangerous to spend time outside without sunscreen and sun protective clothing.  Don’t forget that the skin is the body’s biggest organ and it needs protection when exposed to the sun!

The following is an outline of why it is so important for children and adults to take precautionary measure to protect against sun damage.

To determine the UPF rating, the fabrics must go through rigorous testing according to American Standards and Testing Methods Committee. This method (#183) was developed in 1998 as the testing standard for sun protective fabrics in the United States and was based on the original guidelines established in Australia in 1994

  • What are UVA and UVB Rays? – Perhaps you have heard the terms UVB and UVA and were wondering exactly what they mean. Studies show that the sun’s radiation accounts for 90% of skin aging and skin cancers.  UVB rays are classified as those rays that burn the skin during the sun’s peak hours in the summer months and the UVA rays are the rays that cause premature aging year round, no matter what the weather.
  • How Does The Sun Cause Skin Cancer? – Research has shown that both UVA and UVB rays induce mutations in DNA leading to skin cancers1.  Skin cancer is caused generally by ultraviolet light exposure making it critically important that people protect their exposed skin with sunscreen and use sun protective clothing that protect skin covered by clothing.
  • How Can I Prevent Skin Cancer? – We don’t want to suggest that people stop spending time outside, however there are simple precautions that everyone needs to take to preserve their skin from disease and aging. First off, it is important to apply a high sun protection factor broad spectrum sunscreen to all exposed areas of the skin.  Sunscreen should be reapplied regularly and particularly after active sports and swimming.  Secondly, it is recommended to seek shade and avoid direct sun exposure between the hours of 10am to 3pm.  Thirdly, wear sunglasses, a broad brimmed hat and lip protection. Lastly, cover up with sun protective clothing that has been specially manufactured to block the damaging UVA and UVB rays.
