50+ UV Protection

Sun Protective Swimwear

Check Labels When Buying Sun Protective Swimwear

Sun protective swimwear is the latest way to protect your body from the harmful effects of the sun.  Conventional swimwear provides very little protection, leaving the skin underneath your suit vulnerable to the damaging effects of the sun’s rays.

A great option available to consumers is sun protective swimwear that has been manufactured using a fabric specially designed to provide UV protection.

How Do I Know If I Am Purchasing Sun Protective Swimwear?

Most swimwear has not been tested and designated as providing UV protection. In order to know if the suit you are buying will provide you with UV protection, the tag should state the UPF rating.

The UPF rating is determined using a testing method that determines the ratio of UV measured without the protection of the fabric compared with protection of the treated fabric.

In the marketplace, you will find sun protective swimwear ranging with a UPF of 10 all the way to 50+. If you find a suit with a UPF rating of 20, that means that if 20 units of UV were to reach the fabric of your swimsuit, only one unit will pass through to your skin underneath. Therefore, a fabric with a UPF of 20 blocks 19 out of 20 units of UV (or 95%).

To determine the UPF rating, the fabrics must go through rigorous testing according to American Standards and Testing Methods Committee. This method (#183) was developed in 1998 as the testing standard for sun protective fabrics in the United States and was based on the original guidelines established in Australia in 1994.

To ensure the products you are purchasing will provide the proper protection, always check the label and ask questions. The health of your skin is very important, so ensure you are purchasing sun protective swimwear that will do the job properly!
